Illinois to Get a New Mascot

Illinois has decided to use a new mascot following the men's basketball final home game. They currently use an Indian chief, Chief Illiniwek. Having a new mascot will allow Illinois to hold future NCAA postseason events which are not allowed at any college using American-Indian imagery or mascot.

Major Linebacker

Colorado linebacker, Jon Major, is going to be a national recruit and has already proven it. He has offers from Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Oklahoma State, Utah, Washington, Illinois, Northwestern, Stanford, Washington State, Colorado State, Colorado, Oklahoma, Michigan, Tulsa, Texas Tech, UCLA and Wisconsin. He has listed a top 7, but also states this is very preliminary as he does not know a lot about most of the schools. Here is his top 7:

Colorado, Michigan, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Stanford, Penn State and UCLA

Jon had 107 tackles (15 for losses), three forced fumbles and one interception last season despite missing 4 games due to an ankle injury. He will be a force next year.

Time Rules Reversed

The 2006 NCAA football season started several new rules for assisting in lowering the time needed to play a game. The new rules came under much scrutiny the entire season (not to mention mis-used in the PSU vs Wisconsin game). The rules have been overturned and new ideas have been given to assist instead.

Big PSU Wrestling Weekend

Penn State came off several bad losses to ranked opponents the past few weeks(#1 Minnesota, #11 Illinios and #17 Wisconsin). This weekend was Penn State's turn to take a few away from others. Last Friday night, PSU over matched #12 Northwestern 25-8. Then this past Sunday, PSU stunned #6 Iowa 24-13 at Rec Hall with several key wins over a higher ranked opponent.

Heller posted one of the upsets on the night when he pinned #6 Alex Tsirtsis of Iowa.

Tom McEowen Injured

Defensive lineman, Tom McEowen, was injured earlier this year while playing as a true freshman. Tom ended up using a medical redshirt and sat out the rest of the year. This is when big Phillip Taylor started seeing the field, as PT was expected to redshirt. Unfortunately, Tom has now torn his ACL in winter workouts. He is still possible for the 2007 season, however he has a lot of recovery in front of him.

Okoli Commits

Chimaeze Okoli, defensive lineman from Virginia, has made his college decision. Okoli will be attending Penn State for his football future. Penn State came on strong late must like Chimaeze has come onto the recruiting front sort of late. After his great senior season, Okoli impressed quite a few D1 programs. It came down to Penn State and Virginia Tech and Chimaeze just said he felt more comfortable with the Penn State setting.

After an exciting last 2 weeks, I think PSU is down to their final possible addition. Broderick Green is the only other anticipated addition this class could see.

Number Changes

Apparently, Rodney Kinlaw is changing his number this year from #8 to #20. I doubt anything is for sure yet, but this one is going to be hard to change in my head for a senior number change.

Green Update

Broderick Green is to meet with his coach and family Monday evening to go over everything one last time before coming to a decision. That decision may be before signing day, but most likely will be next Wednesday, National Letter of Intent Day (LOI). Before that day (today actually), Penn State assistant coaches, Brian Norwood and Larry Johnson, Sr., will be visiting Broderick at his home. It is not expected that Joe Paterno will make the visit as many PSU fans hoped due to his leg injury.

It has been reported by many that both Broderick and his mother loved Penn State, however it is also being reported they loved all three: Penn State, USC and Ohio State. The decision will be here soon enough.

With or without BG, Penn State has a solid recruiting class. One that should easily be in the top 20 in the country at the end. With Broderick it would make that class more complete seeing the need for a running back in the program.
