RB Sets Visits

Malcolm Smith, the #6 ranked athlete by rivals.com, has mentioned PSU again. Malcolm mentioned that he will be "going to Penn State, Cal, Michigan and [he] wants to go to Notre Dame". ND is the only school that has not offered Smith at this time.

PSU in Final 3 for Szcerba

Penn State has been mentioned in the top 3 for Andrew Szczerba. Andrew is a tight end prospect from Delaware and lists Maryland and Virginia as his other leaders. He has not put one above the other at this time. His other offers are from Iowa, Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Rutgers and West Virginia. Szczerba would like to make a decision by the end of the summer so stay tuned...

PSU is Langley's Leader

Donald Langley, a DT from Maryland, has received a PSU offer while at camp recently. Langley hold offers from Syracuse, Michigan State, Texax A&M, Rutgers, Maryland, UVA, Temple and others. Others showing interest are Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

PSU has been Donald's dream school ever since he was in the 5th grade.

Everson and PSU

Cedric Everson, #7 ranked CB by scout.com, has listed Penn State in his top 3. The other two include UCLA and Georgia Tech. His other offers include colleges all over the country: Michigan, Michigan State, FSU, Purdue, Colorado, LSU and Michigan. He does not care about distance and will play which ever side of the ball he can best fit the team. He mentioned he has "always liked UCLA and Penn State", but also went on to say he is a city type of kid and likes how GT is located downtown Atlanta.

And Then There Were 4

Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Wisniewski, 4 star OL/DL prospect by scout.com, has narrowed his decision to four schools. The schools are PSU, Michigan, North Carolina and BC. He was in Happy Valley this past weekend for camp as well as a fundraiser. Stefen's father, Leo, is a former PSU player (as I am sure you all know by now), however he continues to say he does not have a leader and is by no means a Penn State lock.

Scout analyst have said otherwise for a good while now that Stefen has been a PSU lock before birth. Time will tell has he plans on making his decision in Nov/Dec so he can enroll early.

3 in 2 Days

Nick Sukay, the 4 star WR/Safety rated by scout.com, has made it official. Nick has given Joe Paterno his verbal commitment. Nick went on to say that the Ohio State vs PSU game last year stuck in his head and he knew it was a tradition he wanted to be involved.

Sukay had 39 scholarship offers. In the end it came down to 3 which he made his decision for PSU over Notre Dame and Pitt.

Breen Commits

Punter, Ryan Breen accepted his Penn State scholarship this past weekend. PSU was Breen's only offer, however Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State held interest. I would expect him to redshirt this year and be the starting PSU punter his redshirt freshman year.

PSU Adds Powell

Chaz Powell received a PSU offer last Sunday and this past weekend he committed to the Nittany Lions. Chaz is a 3 star CB (rated by scout.com) and will be playing that position when he arrives on campus in 2007. He chose PSU over Maryland, BC, UConn, Georgia and Temple.

Another Offer to the List

Penn State has apparently added another player to their offer list from the state of Michigan by the name of Ryan Breen. They have been watching Ryan since his junior year or earlier. The one interesting part of the deal is that Ryan is a punter. I am not too sure how many punters get a full ride from PSU before they step on campus and prove themself. However, if you think about it, I think you will agree it is a good move. I saw some of his videos and the boy can punt. He won the Ohio State punting distance competition. All of his kickoffs in the video either went into the endzone or out of the endzone. If that final kickoff at UM went that far last year, we may have been undefeated. So you can never look at the punter/kicker as a less needed player. We will have to wait and see how this progresses.

Hogue Returns

New York running back Doug Hogue has returned home from his weekend trip to PSU. Hogue left saying "the visit had me going crazy it went so well". He also mentioned that the visit went so well that it put PSU on top of the other schools.

Doug is attending the same high school of former PSU star Jimmy Kennedy.

Houston Ready to Announce

Ryan Houston, the 4 star TB/DE prospect on scout.com, has went from waiting until the season starts to now making his decision in a week. He visited UNC last week and it is expected he will pick the Tarheels. Houston has been recruited by some as a RB, but most feel that he will be on the DLine due to his size.

Another RB Prospect

Many are calling Doug Hogue the NY sleeper prospect. Being New York's yards per carry leader last year with 13.4 YPC, he has already pulled offers from PSU, Maryland and Syracuse. He has already visited both UMD and Cuse, and is set to visit Happy Valley this weekend. He says he is very anxious to get to State College after all the great things he has heard about the campus. It also does not hurt matters that his mother is high on PSU.

I am sure we will hear more about Doug next week after he makes his visit.

Going to Cali for a RB

Coach Vanderlinden has made the trip across the country to visit with Malcolm Smith. Malcolm is a rivals.com top 250 pick and a 4 star running back prospect. He is high on USC as he has a brother that plays WR there, but he was impressed that PSU came for the visit as he knows they don't make the trip often to California. He says he definitely will take a trip to Happy Valley during the season.

Looks like the need at running back is starting to show face as new running back prospects appear to be coming out every week.

Sukay Returns From Pitt

Nick Sukay, 4 star WR/S from Greensburg Central Catholic HS in PA, has returned from his trip to Pitt. This visit concludes his 3 visits (PSU, ND, Pitt) before making his decision. He said that his visit with Pitt was "basically the same stuff that I have seen before".

He thought about making a decision this week, however now says he is going to take some time to discuss it with his family. Either way, it will still not be long for his decision so we will know soon enough.

Sukay visited Happy Valley last week where he received a PSU offer. After that visit, Nick narrowed his choices to 3 and mentioned he would decide soon after visiting them.

Tyler to USC

So why should PSU fans care about Marc Tyler; a 5 star #2 ranked running back in the nation who did not have interest in Penn State. Because a certain other USC RB commitment did have interest in PSU before giving a verbal to USC. Broderick Green, the 5 star #5 ranked RB in the nation earlier this year told USC that he is still a verbal, but he would like to look around a bit as well. Back in March, Broderick said PSU is a "great rushing school". His brother is teammates with Larry Johnson Jr on the chiefs and he said "it would be great to play for him" [Paterno].

With a huge hole being left at running back next year after the loss of Hunt and Scott, there is a need for a big time RB like Broderick Green.

More Respect From Michigan

Yes Michigan. Josh Turel wrote another article on the top players in the Big Ten. This time he concentrated on defensive tackles. He listed Jay Alford as the #1 prospect and Ed Johnson as the #10 prospect in the conference.

Austin Down to 10

The #1 rated scout.com and #2 rated rivals.com prospect in the country, Marvin Austin, has narrowed his college choices to 10. Penn State made that list as well as USC, Miami, Florida State, NC State, Maryland, UVA, North Carolina, Tennessee and Notre Dame.

This is the 3rd year in a row that Penn State is in the running for the #1 scout.com prospect in the nation. Two years ago was when PSU landed Derrick Williams and last year lost the battle for Myron Rolle to FSU.

Coach Johnson appears to have a good bond with him as well as he is friends with both Antonio Logal El and Phillip Taylor. Lets keep our fingers crossed. It will not be easy.

Game Times Announced

PSU will not only play its first 3 games on national television, they will also play all 3 games with a 3:30 PM kickoff. The Akron game will be televised on ESPN2 while the Youngstown State game will appear on ESPNU. The Notre Dame game was announced a while back as being broadcast on NBC. The only other game currently not listed "To Be Announced (TBA)" is Michigan which will be a crazy night for a 8:00 PM ABC game.

Powell High on Lions

Chaz Powell, a DB/RB from Susquehannock HS, visited PSU over the weekend for an unofficial visit. He left pleased and Joe told him that if it were up to them, he would have an offer. However the staff is waiting for results from an academic test he took which they have yet to know the results. He is hoping to hear something next week. He is also planning a Ohio State visit next week, however he said "unless something happens with Penn State". The word is if PSU offers, Powell will be a Lion.

Chaz currently has offers from Maryland, BC, Temple, UConn and Georgia.

Andrew Dailey is a Rivals.com pre-evaluation top 100 for the 2007 year. Andrew did have a trio of leaders in Notre Dame, Ohio State and PSU, however he has recently removed OSU from the list. He stated they are not taking many Linebackers and early playing time is something that interests him. There is plenty of time for others to gain ground before he make a choice. Andrew listed August has his time for an announcement.

Michigan Reporter Ranks Big 10 LBs

A GoBlueWolverine.com reporter recently ranked the outside linebacker position in the Big 10. I am sure this had to kill him to do, but Penn State has the top two ranked outside linebackers in the Big 10 in Paul Posluszny and Dan Connor. Sean Lee was even ranked at #15 to round out his preseason top 15 picks.

Even after the defensive losses we took last year, I can not wait to see them play again this year. It should make for a very exciting, fast and explosive defense.

This time a Wide Receiver by the name of Jeshua Anderson. Jeshua has listed PSU in his top 5 which also includes Cal, Oregon, Washington and Arizona State. Currently his only offer is from Nevada. Barksdale to take Happy Visit

Joseph Barksdale is another Michigan native that PSU is trying to steal away from the state powers. The DT has over 60 offers from colleges all over the nation. He has visited
Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and camped at a Longhorn camp in Austin. He is planning visits to LSU, Florida State, Miami, Penn State, USC and others.

Joseph would be a big pull for PSU but this one is a long way from over. He plans on making a mid season decision.

Sukay Shift

Just a week ago, Nick Sukay (WR/Safety) did not even have a PSU scholarship and it looked like the lions were going to take a pass with him. Not after last week. Thursday, PSU offered Sukay and he later followed that with stating his top 3 schools: Penn State, Pitt and Notre Dame.

Nick is considered the #2 prospect in PA and #94 in the nation overall by rivals.com.

His high school is not new to D1 football as 2 of their players last year signed with USC.
